Agricultural Biorefinery Mission in France

Date: November 13-20, 2010
Location: Reims, France (map)

Mission highlights

  • Visit of two industrial biorefinery installations (Pomacle-Bazancourt and Roquette-Lestrem)
  • Individual business-to-business meetings (minimum 2 per participant)
  • Meetings with leaders of research centers and economic development actors
  • Participation in the Pentose Congress (preliminary program) with a special discount rate of 420€ (vs 600€)

Key objectives

  • To observe the technological advances through industrial visits
  • To acquire strategic information about leading-edge technologies
  • To establish strategic partnerships (technology, commercial, R&D)
  • To investigate the potential realization of technological transfer, and
  • To facilitate the information exchange between France and Canada.

Industrials, clusters and research facilities targeted by the mission

  • IAR (cluster of 42 industrials dedicated to the transformation of agro-resources into bioenergy, agro-materials, biomolecules and active ingredients)
  • Champagne Céréales (farming and agri‐industrial cooperative)
  • Cristal Union (sugar production facility)
  • Chamtor (starch and glucose production facility)
  • Cristanol (ethanol production facility)
  • Bioamber (succinic acid production unit)
  • ARD research center (79 collaborators and 5 teams dedicated to finding new opportunities for agricultural products)
  • B.R.I. platform (center for excellence, open platform BIO-DEMO, biorefinery institute, BRI Technopole)
  • Futurol pilot plant (2nd generation bioethanol from whole plants or from lignocellulosic biomass)
  • BIOHUB  (involving Roquette, DSM and Metabolic Explorer)

Expenses associated with the mission and refunding modalities

With an evaluated value of over 5000$, participants will be refunded 85% of the expenses related to the transportation to Reims (up to 1050$) and hotel (up to 980$) during the mission.  Also, transportation to the industrial sites, organization and local support are completely covered by registration to the mission.  Expenses not admissible for refund include registration to Pentose Congress (600€), meals (estimated to 400$) and personal expenses.

The context of agricultural biorefinery

The concept of biorefinery is full of promises for the future, because it aims at the manufacturing of new products from the agricultural biomass while being a true green alternative of the current petrochemical sector. As with the petrochemical oil, plants consist of a variety of molecules that can be refined. The plant constituents can be extracted and purified to allow the manufacturing of a variety of bioproducts: polymers, fuels, surfactants, lubricants or bio-ingredients. Studies have evaluated that 20 % of the chemical substances currently on the market will be produced using agricultural biomass, corresponding to an annual turnover of the order of 300 billion dollars at the world level.

About this mission

Organized by CRIBIQ (Consortium of research and innovations in industrial bioprocesses in Quebec), and made possible with the financial contribution of NRC-IRAP, this agricultural biorefinery industrial networking mission will be held in the region of Champagne-Ardenne and Picardie between November 13 to 20th, 2010.  A preliminary program of the mission is available on our website and will be updated regularly.
